Open VS Gold League

Gold League

  • Only in-diocese programs may participate in this league.

  • Student-athletes must either:

    • Attend the school, or

    • Be a current CCD/Faith Formation family member who has been enrolled in the program for a minimum of 18 consecutive months
This must be certified by both the Program Director and the Pastor.

  • 2025–2026 8th Grade Grandfather Rule (one-year exception):
If an 8th-grade student-athlete legally played for your program in both 6th and 7th grade, they may play for your program this year only if there is prior written documentation from either the Eligibility Committee or the CYO Director of Athletics (for example, an email clearing the player in the past).

Open League

  • Roster requirement: At least 40% of the roster must be current school/program members.

  • On-court participation requirement: At least 40% of the participants on the court at all times must be current school/program members.
If this cannot be met, the team must play with fewer players until the 40% requirement is achieved (teams should plan accordingly for absences, injuries, disqualifications, etc.).

  • Residency limit (local focus): No more than two players may reside outside San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

    • This limit increases by one for each student attending your school who lives outside the two counties.

    • The number is capped at two for programs not affiliated with a school.
(This league is still intended for local student-athletes.)

  • Spectator conduct (fan ejections):

    • The first fan ejection places that specific team on probation.

    • A second game involving a fan ejection results in that team being immediately expelled for the remainder of the season.
Schools/programs are responsible for ensuring appropriate spectator behavior at all times.

Applies to Both Leagues

  • No athlete may play for another program if they attend a school SF CYO serves, unless that program is not offering that particular sport.

  • No athlete may play for two different SF CYO schools/programs in the same scholastic year, unless the first program they played with is not offering that particular sport.

  • No athlete may play in a CYO league if they attend a school the PPSL serves.

  • Any team that uses an illegal player will:

    • Forfeit all games in which the athlete participated, and

    • Be ineligible for postseason participation.

  • Any contest in which three separate participants (player, coach, and/or scorekeeper) receive a technical foul / yellow card will result in that team forfeiting the contest.

  • The CYO Director of Athletics has the authority to make decisions on any situations not specifically covered in the rules.
