FAQ Playoffs and Championships

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY: Boys 3rd-8th grade are eligible to play CYO basketball for a school or Parish sports program which participates in CYO Athletics. The criteria for eligibility is based on a childs residence or where they attend school. The child must either attend school or live within the geographic boundaries of the Catholic parish or program. Interested players should contact the Athletic Director for the specific school/program they wish to join. Contact information for all the schools/programs who participate in CYO Athletics can be found under the "info" section of the leagues website: http://athletics.cccyo.org/contact/.

HOW DO I JOIN A TEAM?: Any child who resides or attends school in San Francisco and San Mateo can participate in CYO Athletics. To find out where a child is eligible please contact cyoathletics@cccyo.org or call 415-972-1348.

REGISTRATION: Players register directly through the school/parish program, not through CYO. The school/parish program then registers their teams into the league. Cost per team is $510 for Archdiocesan schools/programs and $560 for non-Archdiocesan schools/programs (which includes 8 league games (playoffs and championships, all referee costs, gym space, team and individual trophies, coaches clinics for all sports, achievement series games (with a t-shirt) and administration of the league and website.)

SEASON:

NOTE: Games are scheduled Friday 5pm-9pm; Saturday 9am-6pm; and Sunday 12pm-6pm; with occasional week night games 5pm-9pm.

POST-SEASON: The top four teams in each division advance to post season play. The format for the single elimination playoff round is 1st place vs. 4th place; 2nd place vs. 3rd place; with the winners advancing to a single elimination championship round. If two teams finish with the same record, head-to-head results determine playoff eligibility and seeding. Trophies are awarded to the 1st place and 2nd place teams immediately following the championship game.

8TH GRADE ACHIEVEMENT GAME: Each 8th grade team may send one players to participate in an exhibition game at the conclusion of the season. All players receive a commemorative t-shirt and will be listed in the game program.

GAME/BALL/COURT/PLAYERS:

3rd/4th/5th/6th - Players: 5 v. 5; Ball size: 28.5"-29" 18-20oz; Hoop Height: 10'; Free throw Distance: 15'; Gametime: 4 six-minute quarters w/5 minute half-time. Running clock (except substitutions, fouls, last 10 seconds of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter, and last 2 minutes of 4th quarter).

7th/8th - Players: 5 v. 5; Ball size: 29.5"-30" 20-22oz; Hoop Height: 10'; Free throw Distance: 15'; Game time: 4 seven-minute quarters w/5-minute halftime. Running clock (except substitutions, fouls, last 10 seconds of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter, and last 2 minutes of 4th quarter).

PARTICIPATION RULE: All players must play a minimum of one full quarter per half, except on teams with eleven or more players. GAME LOCATIONS: Various gyms in San Francisco, Daly City, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay.

COACHES: All CYO coaches are required to be fingerprinted or undergo a background check, take the online course , Recognizing, Reporting, & Preventing Signs of Child Abuse and attend a mandatory coaching clinic every school year.
