Over 250 parents, coaches, athletic directors, community leaders and CYO supporters attended the CYO Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on Friday, March 7 at the CYO Gym at St. Emydius Parish in San Francisco.

2008 honorees inducted into the CYO Athletics Hall of Fame were longtime CYO Official Ben Legere, former CYO player and legendary coach Bob Drucker, who represents three generations of CYO Athletes, and SFFD Chief Joanne Hayes-White, who, in 1974, was a part of the first generation of CYO female participation as we know it today.

Dinner guests, including Archbishop George Niederauer, Msgr. Harry Schlitt, Bishop Ignatius Wang, Msgr. Michael Harriman (St. Cecilia), Fr. Dave Ghiorso (St. Charles), Fr. Tom Parenti (St. Brendan), Fr. John Talesfore (St. Mary’s Cathedral), Maureen Huntington (Superintendent of Catholic Schools), Fr. Joe Walsh (St. Stephen), Fr. Bill Brady (St. Emydius), SFFD Deputy Chiefs Richard Kochevar and Gary Massetani, and Supervisor Sean Elsbernd, dined on a scrumptious pasta dinner and enjoyed the jubilant evening among family, friends and—in some cases—former teammates!

Hosted by nationally-known comedian and CYO coach Bob Sarlatte, the inaugural dinner celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of San Francisco CYO Athletics’ legacy of leadership as it continues its tradition of providing healthy growth and development opportunities for Bay Area youth and inducted the 2008 Honorees into the CYO Athletics Hall of Fame.

Sarlatte shared personal memories and anecdotes of each honoree and throughout the evening guests could be seen laughing, smiling and reminiscing about their own fond memories of CYO Athletics. “When you play sports, you learn that athletes come in all shapes and sizes and colors and that everyone brings his or her own special gift to the team; the values of sportsmanship, respect for self and values are learned when you play or are part of a team,” said Hall of Fame inductee Hayes-White.

The dinner will be an annual fundraiser to honor those who have helped to distinguish CYO Athletics.

A big thanks to the following programs for attending and supporting the Hall of Fame last Friday night: Mission Dolores, Salesian, Star of the Sea, Stuart Hall, St. Brendan, St. Brigid, St. Cecilia, St. Elizabeth, St. Ignatius, St. James, St. Thomas Apostle, St. Stephen, St. Thomas More, and St. Vincent de Paul.

We would also like to acknowledge our Hall of Fame events committee and co-chairs, Tim Curran, Deborah Dasovich and Peggy Youngblood for a job well done. Hope to see you all next year!
